Yeşilyurt Weaving

Produced in the town of Yeşilyurt in the Province of Muğla in the Aegean Region, Yeşilyurt weaving is said to have a history of 350 years. 

Raw silken yarns and mostly cotton yarns are used for Yeşilyurt weavings.

These are woven on two types of looms; wholly wooden high looms are used for fabrics woven with coarse yarns with a width of 60 cm, while fabrics with a width of 90 cm are woven on whipped looms with a wooden body and iron comb and heald wires.

Weavings mostly produced in Yeşilyurt are striped (yollu) or checkered.

Six types of weavings are created with traditional colour and pattern samples via the bezayağı technique.
These are ‘helali’, ‘alyanak’, ‘breechcloth, ‘bürümcük’, ‘sheet' and ‘bed linen’.

- Helali weaving is produced with raw silken yarn in the wefts and 100% cotton yarn in the warps. This type of weaving is used more for men’s underwear. 

- Alyanak weaving used to be produced in the past as men’s shirts and belts with white and red checkered patterns. 

- Peştamal weaving is produced with a width of 60 cm and used as a headscarf. 

- Bürümcük weaving is a type of weaving mostly produced with multi-twisted raw silk in the warp and weft. The yarns are not dyed prior to weaving. These fabrics have a curved appearance due to the use of twisted yarns. 

- Sheet weaving is woven in vertical stripes with cotton yarns. Today, these works are used as headscarves and shirts. 

- Bed linen weaving is produced with cotton wefts and cotton and sometimes woollen warps by sewing 60 cm-wide fabrics together into a bed linen.
