Çanakkale Museum

The museum in Çanakkale was an important place of production of ceramics in Ottoman Empire and took its name from the pottery that is produced here and sold to other regions. It was opened in 1960 and in 1984 it began to serve in its new building.

In the garden of the museum which has 5 salons, there are embossed works, gravestones, statues and epitaphs.

 

In the 1st salon, samples from Çanakkale ceramics that were produced between the end of 17th century and beginning of 20th century and some wooden arts belonging to Ottoman Era are exhibited. Besides, in this salon, there are also findings from historical places; like the cities of Troas region and Hellenistic and Roman works of art that were found through the excavations at Kyzikos in Mysia region.

 

The 2nd salon is the section in which the oldest collections of the museum and Troia creations are exhibited. Fossils, axes of Paleolithic Era, prehistoric findings of Beşige Tepe and creations pertaining to layers of Troia are also exhibited.

 

In the 3rd salon, there are creations of Hellenistic Era that were found in tumuli of Çan and Yenice, and necropol findings Attika and Korinth imported ceramics of 7-2 BC in Tenedos. Moreover, one can also see the samples of the grey monochromatic ceramics that are peculiar to Aiolis region.

 

In the forth salon, there are bronze cremation pots with writings that were found in the excavations at Dardanos Tumulus , jewellery, gemmas, golden rings, crowns and diadems, oil lamps, pieces of textile, sandals, wooden goods and pieces of kline. The statuette of Aphrodite made of terracotta is considered as one of the masterpieces.

 

In 5th salon, cremation pots whose edges are covered with small pouches that were brought from Assos (Behramkale), figures of terracotta in many different positions and also ceramics of Attika and Korinth and Phoenician glass can be seen. Furthermore, this salon also offers the chance to see the creations of the Sanctuary of Apollon Smintheion and precious samples of coins and works of art that are made of glass.
