Sanlıurfa Archaeology Museum comes fifth in Turkey with its 74.000 works, in terms of numbers of the works exhibited. Besides this it is one of the most important museums of Turkey with regard to characteristics and qualities of the Works. Many works can be seen at Museum from Paleolithic era till today.
Balıklıgol statue, which is 12.000 years old and known as the oldest one in the world, and other finds of Göbekli Tepe are exhibited at the Museum.
There are exhibition halls; three of them are used for archaeological purposes and one of them is used for ethnographical purposes, a multipurpose hall, library, administrative offices, warehouses, laboratory and a photography area at the Museum.
The province of Sanlıurfa is the place at where the most excavations are carried out in Turkey. For this reason, the city center and urban areas of the city have been declared as protected area. The whole cultural heritage of the area is not possible to fit in a Museum; Sanlıurfa is a real “Open- air Museum “indeed.
