The Foundations Carpet Museum is in Hünkar Kasr of Sultan Ahmed Mosque in İstanbul.

The structure is the very first example of Hünkar Kasrs which were designed in order to set a place in which Sultan could rest and converse either before namaz or after it.

Hünkar Kasr which was constructed with Sultan Ahmed Mosque, was built between 1609 and 1917 by Sultan Ahmed I. The architecture of it is Sedefkâr Mehmet Ağa.

The museum in which authentic Turkish rugs and very rare rugs are exhibited, has 448 rugs.

62 rugs are alternately exhibited. The collection of the museum was organized with the rugs which were donated to the mosques due to an old Islamic tradition, and history and artistic value of which are magnificient. It is the unique museum in which only rugs are exhibited in Turkey.

The rugs that have the earliest period are those of principalities era of 14 century.

Among the rugs exhibited, there are rugs of Early Ottoman Era of 15 century, the rugs of the Classical Age of 16 and 17 centuries (Uşak rugs; Bergama, Konya and Kula rugs), Kazakh rugs of 18 century, Iran rugs of 16 century, Caucasian rugs, Turkoman rugs, and Yağcıbedir prayer rug (seccade) of 19 century.   

One of the most appealing sections of the museum is Uşak rugs with motifs of stars, medallions and birds which were weaven in Uşak region which was an important center of weaving rugs in 16 – 18 centuries. The most precious samples of the prayer rugs pertaining to Kula, Gördes, Konya, Lâdik and Milas regions of 19 century are also exhibited.
